James was spending the day with his Grandmother and as soon as he got aboard her vehicle he reached for the radio. Not to change the station or turn up the volume – he shut it off, stating;
“The thing I like best about driving with Dad is that all we do is talk. It sure makes the time go quickly. Can we do the same?”
“… the thing I like best about driving…”
Mother was surprised, but not shocked. Immediately picking up on his cue to start a real conversation with a story about our first “grown up” road trip;
“A long time ago, your father and I drove across the island for a tourism show in Corner Brook, Newfoundland. That’s an 8 hour ride and I was really looking forward to it since all my boys (your uncles) were growing up and had recently moved out of our family home in Topsail. That was a hard time for me, so I wanted to make certain this trip was perfect. I made a nice lunch to eat along the way, checked the weather and highway conditions. I even picked out several CD’s from the boy’s old music collection so we’d have a good vibe for the drive.
“… good vibe for the drive…”
But you know what your Dad said when I reached for the stereo like you just did?”
“I do!”, he blurted;
“Dad said; There’ll be no music in my rig! This here is a conversation car.”
“You’re right – and you know what happened?”
“What?”
“We never turned the radio on once. We talked and talked and before we knew it, Corner Brook was only moments away. It was the best drive ever. My only complaint is that the time flew by too quickly.
Thankfully the memory lasted forever, and I hope this day does too!”
“… the memory has lasted forever…”
Absolutely true – the best place for conversation is one on one in the car.
Yes – ideal. Something about an endless highway that inspires conversation
