MILLENNIAL MAGIC

One of the hottest topics in today’s ‘Human Resources’ (HR) world is the wave of ‘Millennials’ who are entering the workplace in a state of stress. Despite current global economic growth, expansion and opportunity, millennials are expressing uneasiness and pessimism about their careers, their lives and the world around them.

“… the next generation…”

HR has always been a fascinating study, but this is a particularly interesting juncture as the mass of baby boomers begin the transition towards retirement at the exact moment these 20 somethings are pulling up a seat.

Though we’ve always fretted about “the next generation” – this is an age gap whose effects have been further compounded by technological advancements, ever changing communication channels, and a dramatic shift in personal values.

“… near entire crew of Millennials…”

Really? So how is it possible that we find ourselves in the company of such a fine staff of young men and women who work diligently on delivering the level of service that perpetuates the McCarthy’s Party Tours legacy. A near entire crew of Millennials who exhibit nothing but fun, joy, energy and dedication at every moment we share in our office.

Though our Brother Mark is a whiz at Human Resources and its many motivational qualities; creating a hip working environment with lots of modern features, plenty of team building activities, and an open-door policy for any topic of discussion. He also has an excellent understanding of the tourism industry – and this is an environment that appeals to every generation, most especially our youth and the great world they want to inherit. As he often notes, tourism is perfectly positioned to “move” Millennials.

“… finding our “Why”…”

Apple Computer’s CEO Steve Jobs often talked about the importance of finding our “why”, and today’s millennials make it their mantra. McCarthy’s Party Tours provides many tangible “whys” for our family of co workers and the real impact they make on a daily basis.

Our partners operate small restaurants, motels, and attractions in remote regions where every single tourist dollar is critical to their survival and success. Its “Why” we need to ensure every tour is perfectly organized so they can provide their very best products and services in a relaxed and enjoyable fashion.

“… they provide the very best…”

Our guests are trusting us with their vacation plans, the most precious time and money they possess. Its “Why” we need to ensure their experience is especially well spent.

“… most precious time and money…”

And we have a legacy to uphold – a standard established by a great matriarch who truly loved her country and “Why” Newfoundlanders should be acknowledged as a special breed of people.

“… a great matriarch…”

We are so grateful to share this world and embrace the opportunity to promote the many wonderful Newfoundland traditions that truly resonate with todays Millennials.

There’s a lot of love and respect for each and every one of you.

Oh, and by the way, here’s the ‘Listicle’ that got this story started;

10. Millennials grew up in a boom time for personal and work technology. These young professionals are used to working in a digital environment and expect the same in the workplace. Tourism relies on many social media, and online platforms that require varying degrees of digital know how – a natural fit for these new office warriors.

9. Sixty-eight percent of Millennials would like to be personally called out for their efforts – There is no better place to find more deserving accolades than the tourism industry and an appreciative audience. Short of the stage itself, which is where our staff are often invited for a public thank you from a room full of visiting delegates / conventioneers

8. The average millennial sends 20 texts daily – Tourism activities generate so much text, email, and facetime opportunities – and they’re mostly all with fun, friendly, hospitable, like minded people.

7. Co-working with colleagues appeals to 40 percent of millennials – Tourism is all about teamwork. Whether it’s the enormous trust we continue to build with our partners, or the many hands required to plan and deliver convention packages. We work well together, and it shows

6. Sixty percent of Millennials produce and share content online. In today’s tourism industry, much of our sales and promotion rely on content created through shared experiences. We encourage our staff to join our tours, meet the guests, attend tourism events and activities, and post their experiences online.

5. Fifty-six percent of Millennials say technology makes them more efficient. Tourism relies on much of the same technology that they thrive on, and so provides proper budgets for support equipment and services. They won’t be turned off by outdated equipment or archaic communication / filing systems

4. A third of millennials want questions answered in real time. Though tourism is about planning and scheduling well into the future, access to the booking and delivery information is available online; using web sites, text or social media pages.

3. Almost three-quarters of millennials are willing to share personal information to get better service. Much of the tourism industry relies on personal relationships that evolve when we share our personal information and earn our co workers / guest’s respect.

2. They’re more financially savvy than their predecessors. Not only do they save and invest but they appreciate the value of a dollar and how important it is to all aspects of the tourism industry. From the price conscious shopper to the necessities of working within strict budgets and time constraints – tourism appeals to Millennials sensibilities

1. And the number first reason is….

“… our “Why”
