I took a young couple out on a St. John’s / Cape Spear tour yesterday. Not how I expected to spend my afternoon since it’s not exactly our busy season and we wouldn’t normally run a tour bus for two people. But it was a lovely day, the sun was shining, the temperatures were relatively mild and I am especially curious about any guests who visit Newfoundland at this time of year. As you can see from the photographs, I was well rewarded in every way and their company was stellar.
My guests were both university students who had recently returned to PEI following a 7 month backpacking trek through South East Asia. Home safe, it seemed they hardly had time to unpack when they spotted a great seat sale ticket to Newfoundland. Sharing a keen interest in linguistics and a longing desire to check out their neighbouring island (as well as Memorial University) – they paid no heed to the season, found an inexpensive apartment on ‘Air BnB’ , jumped on the plane and called us. For which I am especially thankful.
I really don’t know how anyone can complain or criticize today’s youth as it would seem to me that we are being followed by a brilliant and keenly interested generation of talented young men and women. They had great stories of their own, asked many questions and were most willing to engage and discuss any and all of the nuances that make this such a special part of the world. In fact, we had such a wonderful afternoon that I even extended the usual excursion with a side trip out to Alan Doyle’s hometown of Petty Harbour when I discovered they were huge ‘Great Big Sea’ fans and were most disappointed to hear they had missed Allan’s recent St. John’s performance by a week.
