Everyone is talking about the Broadway Musical sensation, ‘Come from Away’ that we saw in St. John’s, Newfoundland last week. And why wouldn’t we? Its an amazing performance that truly captures every human emotion experienced by those passengers who were grounded in Gander during the 911 attacks, and the Newfoundlanders who helped them survive, and actually embrace the week that followed.
This was one of the most horrifying events in recent history – and while New York City became known as ‘Ground Zero’ on that fateful day, the people of Gander will be forever remembered as “Grounded Hero’s”
“…. Here to Stay”
Everyone remembers where they were on September 11, 2001. It was a horrifying experience that left us shocked, and afraid. Indeed, a dark day in human history. But in Gander Newfoundland, a small community of barely 10,000 people were engaging in counter measures that would restore our faith in humanity for years to come
While we all have great stories and personal memories from that day – there are few that compare with the wonderful acts of human kindness exhibited by the Newfoundland people when they greeted 6700 guests – 38 planeloads of airline passengers whose transatlantic flights were grounded here for five days.
“… hit Broadway musical…”
Not a big deal for a major center – but these arrivals essentially doubled the population of this small town; taxing the limited resources and compounding the obvious concerns about the events in New York. Thankfully, the community rallied together, scrambling to provide essential services and setting the stage for a most eventful week that’s beautifully captured in the writing and performance of the hit Broadway musical ‘Come From Away’.
A story the world will never forget.

“Everyone is talking about…”
The reaction of the people of Gander, NL, to the sudden influx of people is an example to the rest of the world on how to treat others. We can all learn from their example.
Come From Away is a wonderful musical.
Andrew, I just reviewed COME FROM AWAY in Toronto the other day in their new digs at the Elgin Theatre. It’s still a powerful show and one that must be seen by as many people as possible. So good to hear the response in Newfoundland was tremendously warm and receptive.
