We were so fortunate to spend time with Justin Fong at this year’s ‘Destination St. John’s’ Christmas Party . He is a talented and delightful young man – as you might well imagine given the wonderful creativity and brilliance he’s introduced to the ‘Quidi Vidi’ brand and their ingenious assortment of craft beers.
“… ingenious assortment…”
We were effusive with our praise for his recent projects and how much our guests appreciated their brewery experiences. The new ‘Day Boil’ beer really resonates with the tourists, the blue ‘Iceberg’ bottles are still cherished, and everyone’s having fun with the ‘Calm Tom’ brand; laughing uproariously at a personal anecdote we share from a road trip last spring.
“… Calm Tom story competition…”
Too late for the official ‘Calm Tom’ story competition – a promise was made to share it on the McCarthy’s Party Tours blog.
Sooooo…..
“A fellow picked up a young hitch hiker on the outskirts of St. John’s, Newfoundland. It wasn’t something he’d normally do but there was a real sincerity in the man’s “look” as he passed – causing the driver to hesitate long enough that the highway man had quite the trot to catch up when the truck finally stopped. Enough time to shove down any foolish notions about axe murderers and mad men.
Thankfully – since the kid proved to be an entertaining character who was most engaging, chatting away about his life aspirations; including his ultimate destination – a comedy show in Montreal where he was scheduled to perform in the week ahead.
The driver laughed, and with a little prompting the kid launched into the “bit” he was working on about Quidi Vidi’s new IPA – ‘Calm Tom’;
“Now when it comes to the ‘Calm Tom’ brew – you will discover the first one stands true to its name sake. But that second beer is better described as ‘Passive Aggressive Tom’, and before you’re even half way through the third bottle, you might as well call it ‘Tom Thumb’, (as he rubbed the end of his nose like a boxer and upped with his dukes), cause you’re that tangly you’d even tackle ‘Arthur Fonzarelli’. (pronouncing as he dropped his hands with two thumbs up…)
“Ehhhhhh,,,,, boy!”
“… Quidi Vidi’s fine brews…”
The best ‘Calm Tom’ story ever? You’ll be the ultimate judge of that.
In the interim we know these were ‘Happy Days’ for the crowd in Montreal’s La Petite-Italie who really loved the show.
Check out all Quidi Vidi’s fine brews – only in Newfoundland until the issue of National Unity reminds us of the commonalities we share in beer and cheer!
Last summer on our nine-day tour fellow traveler Heinz offered me an Iceberg beer. Not normally a beer drinker, I was a bit hesitant … until I tasted it. I’m still grateful to Heinz (and the Quidi Vidi brewery), and yes, I brought home the beautiful blue bottle. It’s a unique souvenir that brings back fun memories!
have to share this comment on facebook for Heinz to see. He’ll love this. What a trip we had
Thank you for making it so very special. Loved your passion for Newfoundland and your wonderful humor. You’re the best storyteller!
